CORT CEO Stephen Hart

Building communities, not just houses: leading CORT through transformative growthRetry

Stephen Hart represents a new generation of community housing leadership, bringing together experience in mental health, commercial management, and social enterprise. Since joining CORT in 2016, he has overseen the organisation's most ambitious growth phase, securing innovative funding partnerships and delivering hundreds of new affordable homes across Auckland.

CORT Community Housing has evolved from a church-based initiative into one of New Zealand's most significant social housing providers. With over 312 properties providing homes for 550+ people, the organisation demonstrates how effective community housing can transform lives—reducing hospital stays by 92% and generating substantial social returns on investment.

Hart's appointment as CEO in 2022 marked a continuation of CORT's mission whilst embracing new partnership models. His background in mental health informs CORT's supportive landlord approach, recognising that quality housing combined with wraparound support creates pathways for whānau to flourish and contribute to their communities.
