What does CHA do?

Connecting providers, government and communities to deliver affordable homes for all New Zealanders

Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) serves as New Zealand's peak body for community housing, supporting 94 full members through knowledge sharing, resource provision, and sector connectivity. Operating as a charitable incorporated society working alongside Te Matapihi, CHA advocates for housing as a human right whilst delivering data, research, and best-practice insights to government, councils, financial institutions, and the building industry. The organisation leverages privileged access to decision-makers, bringing member voices and lived experience to policy tables whilst collaborating closely with Kāinga Ora.

CHA's membership includes approximately 40 Māori organisations and growing Pacific peoples' providers, ranging from small local operations to entities managing thousands of homes across the motu. Members deliver diverse services including housing navigation, financial capability support, transitional housing, affordable rentals, and progressive home ownership programmes. Partners encompass local authorities, financiers, developers, and other stakeholders investing in affordable housing. CHA's mission extends beyond technical solutions to public education, recognising that lasting change requires all New Zealanders understanding housing challenges and contributing solutions for wellbeing and healthy communities.
